In 1981, the Makena Golf Club's original 18 holes opened on the lower slopes of Haleakula. A decade later, the magnificent setting was exploited to include 36 holes and divide the original 18 holes among the two new courses — Makena North & South. In spite of a marketing folly that incorrectly pointed to the South Course as the premium of the two layouts, the North Course remained the darling of those 'in-the-know.' Playing three to four strokes tougher and—on virtually every hole—delivering breathtaking views of the Maui coastline, as well as Kohoolawe Island, beckoning Lanai, distant Molokai and the nearby volcanic-ring protrusion of Molokini, this is the creme-de-la-creme of Maui designs. The South Course is no more, but golfers are now rewarded with unfettered access to "Maui's most underrated golf course," according to Golf Magazine [Dec. 2009]. We wholeheartedly agree. Maui's finest resort layout features tight doglegs and Kiawe tree-lined fairways that wind gracefully past ancient lava-rock walls, dry gullies and streambeds.
