Some of Hawaii’s Most Memorable Holes
From clever angles to subtle green complexes, Makani showcases some of the craftiest and most enjoyable holes in the islands. It’s a course that reveals more character the more often you play it. -
A Closing Stretch Like No Other

From the first tee to the final putt, Makani’s staff creates a welcoming, relaxed atmosphere that keeps golfers coming back round after round.
Makani Golf Club sits at the 20-mile marker on Highway 190, the scenic corridor linking Kona and Waimea. Its entrance lies roughly 23 miles—or about a 30-minute drive—above Waikoloa Beach Resort and the Waikoloa Heliport. Perched at approximately 2,300 feet above sea level on the leeward slopes of Mauna Kea, Makani enjoys sweeping long-range vistas, refreshingly cooler temperatures, and gentle tradewinds that enhance the playing experience.
Opened in 1997 as Big Island Country Club, this cleverly conceived Perry Dye design has evolved gracefully over the years while remaining true to its original vision. The 18-hole layout is a textbook example of thoughtful country club architecture—distinctly different from resort or daily-fee courses. Country club golf must reward repeat play, continually engage its members, and offer a sustained challenge without becoming punitive. Makani succeeds on every level, presenting a compelling mix of par-3s, par-4s, and par-5s that appeal to golfers of all abilities. One of its defining characteristics is the set of small, classic country-club greens, a notable departure from the sprawling putting surfaces often found on resort layouts.
In many ways, Perry Dye—the late son of legendary architect Pete Dye—masterfully finessed the gently rolling terrain with a subtler interpretation of the Dye design philosophy. Traditionally, Dye courses contrast a perilous side of the fairway with a safer alternative. At Makani, that contrast remains, but in a more forgiving and approachable form, guiding players toward smart choices while never eliminating the challenge.
Water comes into play on nine holes, and there is not a weak link in the routing. The course builds beautifully toward its finish, with a thrilling three-hole stretch at 16, 17, and 18—one each of a par-5, par-3, and par-4. The 16th is a winding par-5 that sets the stage for the signature 17th, an island-green par-3 evocative of the famous 17th at TPC Sawgrass. The round concludes with what many consider Hawaii’s finest finishing hole: a strategic, option-filled par-4 that leaves lovers of great golf design eager to return. And return you must.
Simply put, Makani Golf Club delivers an exceptional golf experience and stands among the best all-around values in the Hawaiian Islands.
