Designed by the renowned Robert Trent Jones Jr., the original Waikoloa Beach Resort Golf Course at Waikoloa Beach Resort Golf is a timeless Big Island classic—one that artfully weaves championship-caliber golf through fields of ancient lava and along the island’s dramatic coastline. Now divided into the Beach Nine and Lakes Nine, the overall routing retains its architectural integrity while offering golfers a diverse and visually arresting 18-hole experience.
The course plays across a surprisingly varied landscape, incorporating 75 strategically placed bunkers, notable elevation changes, and four intimate lakes that come into play both visually and strategically. Most famously, Waikoloa Beach Golf Course is home to one of Hawaii’s premier oceanfront golf holes—the unforgettable signature 6th hole on the Beach Nine.
This stunning par-5 is a masterclass in golf architecture and visual drama. From the tee, the hole doglegs sharply left before bending gently back to the right as it traces the jet-black lava shoreline. All the while, the ultra-blue Pacific Ocean serves as a breathtaking backdrop. From tee to green, the 6th is pure Hawaiian golf theater—and one of those rare holes that virtually demands a pause for photos before the round continues.
Beyond its signature moment, the course consistently delivers crafty, engaging holes throughout what is the elder of the two original Waikoloa Beach Resort layouts. Standouts include Beach 3, 6, and 8, along with Lakes 2, 3, and 8, each offering distinctive shot values, clever green complexes, and memorable visuals. It’s a layout that rewards thoughtful play while remaining accessible and enjoyable for golfers of all skill levels.
In 2009, the course underwent a significant transformation as part of an operational consolidation that shifted play to the more expansive and efficient Kings’ Clubhouse, previously dedicated solely to the Waikoloa Kings’ Golf Course. The resulting redistribution and renumbering of holes proved highly successful, streamlining operations while preserving the character of the original design. Then, in late 2021, another thoughtful reconfiguration of holes and nines created the Big Island’s only 27-hole golf facility, further enhancing flexibility and variety for players.
Adding to the course’s sense of place, the Beach and Lakes Nines wind through and around Hawaii’s second-largest petroglyph field, as well as ancient burial grounds and the remnants of an early Hawaiian fishing village. Few golf courses in the islands offer such a compelling blend of world-class golf, natural beauty, and cultural significance.
Taken together, Waikoloa Beach Resort Golf delivers on every aspect of the Big Island golf experience—stunning scenery, thoughtful design, and a deep connection to the land—fulfilling every golfer’s Hawaiian golf fantasy, and then some.
